A Message from Dr. Chris Lowder, Superintendent  04/11/2017

Superintendent It’s officially spring, and we are in the final stretch of the school year. Later this week, we will take a much-needed break. I hope everyone has a relaxing and enjoyable Spring Break.

But before we step away, we will have the opportunity to watch our athletes compete in the Special Olympics Spring Games April 12-13 at the Cabarrus Arena & Events Center. This year, the U.S. Army is joining our team to help make our athletes Olympic dreams come true. Army personnel will volunteer at the games and also will staff an interactive exhibit in the Olympic Village, as well as provide entertainment during the Opening Ceremonies. We are excited about this new partnership and are looking forward to working with them.

Please join me in congratulating our Board of Education and our Finance Department on receiving the Association of School Business Officials International Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting. Our district was recognized for our Comprehensive Annual Financial Report for the 2016 fiscal year and for meeting or exceeding the program’s high standards for financial reporting and accountability.

In other news, our Board of Education voted to adopt the Budget Proposal for the 2017-2018 school year. The proposal includes funding for instructional resources, additional technology, and building and grounds maintenance. Next steps are to present our proposed budget to the Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners, who have been awesome partners throughout this process. We appreciate their generosity in providing funds to purchase land for new schools, funding for additional school buses, and additional funds for teacher supplements.

We also are keeping a watchful eye on decisions coming from the N.C. General Assembly regarding changes to class size requirements for grades K-2. Under the proposed bill, Cabarrus County Schools would be required to hire 59 teachers and provide 25 additional classrooms to comply with the proposed bill. This proposal will be a significant hardship for our district (as well as many others across the state). For us, the hardship is two-fold, affecting us from a staffing standpoint, as well as a physical space standpoint. We will continue to monitor the situation and keep you posted.

Later this month, we will celebrate the opening of the new W.R. Odell Elementary School with a dedication ceremony on April 30th. The public is invited to attend.

Let me reiterate my wishes to everyone for a safe and happy Spring Break. Come back refreshed and ready to tackle the final weeks of the school year.

Here’s to taking a break!

Chris
